Non Sparking Bung Wrench

Material :

Pahwa MetalTech's Non Sparking Bung Wrench is available in two premium non-sparking alloys: QTi® (Copper Titanium) and BronAL® (Aluminium Bronze).

QTi® offers superior hardness and tensile strength for heavy-duty applications, with a longer service life than conventional beryllium copper.

BronAL® delivers excellent corrosion resistance, ideal for marine, chemical, and humid environments. Both alloys comply with ATEX, EN, and IS non-sparking tool certifications and are non-magnetic, ensuring safety in Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 classified areas. Material test reports and special certifications are available on request.

Size and Range :

Pahwa MetalTech offers the Non Sparking Bung Wrench in the following specifications: Type A and Type B.

The range covers the most common operational requirements for hazardous area maintenance.

All sizes are manufactured to precise tolerances for reliable fit and performance. Custom sizes and configurations beyond the standard range are available on request for specific site requirements or OEM applications. Contact Pahwa MetalTech for custom configuration enquiries.

Applications :

Pahwa MetalTech's Non Sparking Bung Wrench is used across critical hazardous industries.

Oil and gas terminals, chemical warehouses, solvent storage and distribution, petroleum depots, pharmaceutical API facilities, paint manufacturers, agrochemical warehouses, and automotive lubricant filling operations where steel drum bungs must be opened safely in classified areas.

In all these applications, QTi® and BronAL® non-sparking alloys eliminate ignition risk from tool-to-surface contact, protecting personnel, equipment, and facilities. These tools help operations teams comply with OISD, PESO, ATEX, and other international safety frameworks governing classified zones.

Do's

  • Confirm Type A or Type B wrench selection before approaching the drum — testing on the wrong type risks bung damage.
  • Stabilise the drum on a flat, non-slip surface and ensure it cannot roll or tip before applying the wrench.
  • Apply slow, even rotational pressure — bungs are often over-tightened at filling and require steady effort to break.
  • Inspect the bung threads before re-sealing to confirm they are clean, undamaged, and free of chemical buildup.
  • Use a torque-limiting device when re-sealing bung caps on drums that will be transported by road or rail.
  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves and face shield — residual pressure in the drum may expel liquid on initial crack.
  • Mark the bung wrench with the drum type it is assigned to (e.g. solvent, acid) to prevent cross-use.
  • Log the bung wrench inspection date on the site tool register and replace if the engagement lugs show wear.

Donts

  • Never use an improvised bar, pipe, or hammer to break a seized bung — this risks drum deformation and a dangerous spill.
  • Do not open a bung on a drum that has been in direct sunlight or near heat sources without checking for pressure first.
  • Avoid fully removing the bung in one motion — crack it first to release any built-up vapour pressure slowly.
  • Do not leave an open drum unattended in a classified zone even for short periods — vapour build-up is rapid.
  • Never re-use a cracked, cross-threaded, or corroded bung cap — it will fail to seal and create a leak hazard.
  • Do not use the bung wrench as a striking tool or general-purpose lever in the field.
  • Avoid storing used bung wrenches without cleaning — dried chemical residue corrodes the engagement lugs over time.
  • Do not allow a single operator to handle large or heavy drums alone during bung opening — two-person operation is safer.
